Favorite Disney Character Challenge - #05: Friend Owl from Bambi (1942).
One of the first creatures to see the titular character when he was born, Friend Owl is the warm, wise, yet occasionally ornery denizen of the forest. Constantly awoken from his slumber throughout the course of the film, he begrudgingly tries to get through each day, all the while looking over and observing what goes on around him, and providing a few words of wisdom along the way. He teaches Bambi, Thumper and Flower about the concept of being “twitterpated”, leading to a lengthy, somewhat-biased diatribe about the effects of being stricken with love.
It was one of the first roles for character actor Will Wright, who was best known for playing curmudgeonly-type characters in many movies and television shows later on in his career. Eric Larson supervised the animation of both Friend Owl and the Great Prince, polar opposites in terms of character and animation. Larson was able to animate the Great Stag, the personification of dignity and with precise subtly in movement, as well as animate Friend Owl, probably the broadest character in what is otherwise a very realistically-handled film.
