Favorite Disney Character Challenge - #10: Bongo from Fun and Fancy Free (1947)
Fun and Fancy Free is a “package feature” made up of two short stories, the first being “Bongo” and the latter being “Mickey and the Beanstalk”. The earlier story, based on a short story published in Cosmopolitan magazine by Sinclair Lewis, is about a circus bear named Bongo who escapes from a circus for a free life in the wilderness, learning to cope with his new surroundings, falling in love with a lady bear, Lulubelle, and facing against a giant menacing bear named Lumpjaw.
According to the story (narrated by popular singer Dinah Shore), Bongo can juggle while on a trapeze, walk a tightrope, is a master at jujitsu, weight-lifting, wresting and boxing, and could even dive 300ft into a wet sponge! He rides his unicycle everywhere he travels, including the rough terrain of the forest. While it does take him a while to get used to living the life of a wild bear (being domesticated, he can’t even climb a tree or growl like a normal bear), he learns to use all his abilities from his life in the circus to his benefit, impressing Lulubelle and defeating Lumpjaw in battle!
